Fred Herzog
Fred Herzog is a renowned street photographer, taking most of his pictures in the fifties and sixties and truly pioneering color photography in art. Before and During much of Herzog's life black and white photography was the only standard of art photography many photographers viewed colored photography with a bit of disdain seeing it as not as involved and therefor not as artistic as Black and whit photography. Fred Herzog's cataloguing of life during this time was viewed much in the same way, his vibrant colors and beautiful deep scenes of everyday life in urban centers really didn't gain any traction or artistic validation until after his artistic career. thankfully Herzog didn't give up with colored photography and is now known as on of the fathers of color photography and street photography alike. his want to step out of the artistic norm and create beauty as he saw it couple with his amazing ability to create emotional depth and a story within each photograph each one similar but unique in subject and point of view. my favorite Fred Herzog photograph is titled "man with bandage" (center). this photograph envelops everything I love about Herzog, The beautiful color palette with both vibrant reds and muted greens creates a warm, summertime feeling for the photo, the leading lines of the telephone wires, road, and, sidewalk leads the viewers eye from a man who seems like hes just been in a brawl and is most likely on the shadier side of life to a frail old woman scolding this gentle man.the juxtaposition of these two characters and the personalities the photograph shows makes for an equally beautiful and funny shot.
